Habitat for Humanity and Arch Solar Partner in Milwaukee

Dec 6, 2022

This Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article examines a partnership between Focus on Energy, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity, and Arch Solar to install solar panels on dozens of affordable homes across Milwaukee. The initiative represents a growing effort to combine renewable energy with affordable housing development, helping low-income families reduce utility costs while expanding access to clean energy technology. The project focuses primarily on neighborhoods such as Harambee and Midtown, where Habitat for Humanity has been constructing new single-family homes on previously vacant lots.

The article explains that Focus on Energy contributed approximately $550,000 to fund the installation of solar panels on 35 Habitat homes. Through this investment, homeowners receive the benefits of solar energy without paying the significant upfront costs usually associated with residential solar systems. Habitat for Humanity leaders emphasized that the homes were already designed to be energy efficient, and adding solar panels further lowers monthly energy expenses for families purchasing the homes.

Milwaukee Habitat officials described the project as both an affordability and community development strategy. Rising utility costs continue to strain household budgets, especially for first-time homeowners. By reducing electricity bills from the beginning of homeownership, the solar installations help families build long-term financial stability and create more predictable living expenses. Habitat leaders also noted that bringing new, energy-efficient homes into underserved neighborhoods contributes to revitalization efforts and encourages additional investment in the community.

Arch Solar, the company responsible for the installations, highlighted the broader importance of demonstrating that solar energy is practical and effective in Wisconsin’s climate. Company representatives explained that many residents still assume solar power works best only in warmer states, but Wisconsin homeowners can still achieve substantial savings and environmental benefits through properly designed systems.

The article also places the initiative within the larger statewide “Grow Solar for Humanity” program coordinated by the Midwest Renewable Energy Association. The program aims to expand renewable energy access to Habitat for Humanity homes throughout Wisconsin while promoting energy independence and sustainability for working families.
