What kind of charger do I need?

Choosing between a Level 1 and Level 2 EV charger in Wisconsin mainly depends on your daily driving, winter needs, electrical system, and budget.

A Level 1 charger uses a standard 120-volt outlet and typically adds about four to six miles of range per hour. It may be sufficient if you drive fewer than 30–40 miles per day, charge every night, or own a plug-in hybrid. Before relying on an existing outlet, make sure it is properly grounded, in good condition, and preferably on a dedicated circuit. Avoid extension cords.

A Level 2 charger uses a dedicated 240-volt circuit and generally adds 25–40 miles of range per hour. It is better suited to full EVs, long commutes, irregular schedules, multiple drivers, or outdoor parking. Wisconsin winters increase energy consumption because the vehicle must heat its battery and cabin. Level 1 can struggle to replace that additional winter usage, while Level 2 provides enough power for charging and scheduled preconditioning.

Installation cost is another major consideration. Level 1 may require no electrical work, but Level 2 normally requires an electrician, electrical permit, and inspection. Arch will need to perform a load calculation to determine whether the service panel can support the charger. Older homes may need a panel or service upgrade, although a lower-powered Level 2 charger or approved load-management system may avoid that expense. Installation costs also rise when your garage is detached or far from the panel.

Wisconsin utilities offer different charger rebates, overnight credits, and time-of-use rates. Confirm eligible charger models and program conditions first. For many Wisconsin households, a 24- or 32-amp Level 2 charger provides the best balance of speed, cost, and electrical capacity.
