What is Domestic Content and Why Does it Matter?

Domestic content refers to how much of a solar project’s equipment is made in the United States. For federal tax credit purposes, it is measured across the project, not just the panels. The rules address structural steel and iron separately from manufactured products such as panels and other equipment.

A panel assembled in the U.S. does not, by itself, establish that the whole project qualifies; the origin of components and the applicable cost calculation also matter. 

When an eligible commercial solar project meets the domestic content rules, the project may receive an additional 10% federal tax credit.
