Arch Installer: Keep Panels Level and Watch Out for Danger

Mar 21, 2023

Solar Power World’s March 2023 article, “Arch Solar installer: Keep panels level and watch out for danger,” highlights practical field advice from Dennis Wells, a foreman at Wisconsin-based Arch Solar. The feature is part of Solar Power World’s annual “Install Tips” series, which gathers insights from experienced solar professionals working on rooftops every day.

Wells emphasizes the importance of using reliable tools and maintaining efficiency during solar installations. He identifies the impact driver as the most essential tool on the jobsite because it is used throughout nearly every stage of the installation process. From mounting rails and securing panels to installing conduit and electrical components, the impact driver plays a critical role in helping crews work quickly and accurately.

The article also discusses the importance of functional workwear for solar installers. Wells explains that durable work pants with multiple pockets, loops, and built-in knee pads are indispensable for rooftop work. The added storage helps workers keep tools accessible while maintaining safe, hands-free movement on roofs. Built-in knee pads also offer better protection and comfort compared to separate strap-on pads, especially on hot or abrasive roof surfaces.

One of the key professional tips Wells shares is the importance of ensuring the first solar module installed is perfectly level and square. Because the first panel acts as the foundation for the entire array, even minor alignment errors can become increasingly noticeable as more panels are installed. He recommends having someone monitor alignment from the ground throughout the installation to maintain a professional final appearance and avoid time-consuming corrections later.

Finally, Wells stresses rooftop safety, warning installers about the dangers of black ice during colder conditions. He notes that slippery surfaces can be difficult to detect and advises workers to carefully test footing before fully committing their weight. Overall, the article reinforces the value of precision, preparation, and safety in high-quality solar installations.
