What to Look for in a Solar Installer

This FOX6 News article “Solar Panel Installer Closes; Panels ‘Have Not Met’ Expectations: Family” examines the challenges some Wisconsin homeowners have faced after solar installation companies suddenly shut down, leaving customers with unfinished work, underperforming systems, and limited support. The story centers on Mike Von Gunten and his family in Bristol, Wisconsin, who invested in solar energy hoping to reduce their environmental impact and lower long-term energy costs. However, their experience became frustrating after the installer they hired, Modern Mill Solar, abruptly went out of business shortly after their system was activated.

Von Gunten explained that he chose solar power because he believes in renewable energy and wanted to contribute positively to the environment. His family had 14 solar panels installed in October 2022. According to the contract, the system was expected to generate approximately 5,800 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Instead, Von Gunten estimates the panels have only produced around 3,800 kilowatt-hours per year, significantly below expectations. He described feeling disappointed and misled by the company’s promises.

The article broadens the discussion by highlighting instability within portions of the residential solar industry. FOX6’s Contact 6 investigation found that several solar companies serving Wisconsin customers—including Modern Mill Solar, Solcius LLC, Moxie Solar, and Sun Badger Solar—have either shut down, declared bankruptcy, or faced mounting consumer complaints in recent years. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection reportedly received dozens of complaints related to unfinished projects, financing concerns, and communication breakdowns.

Renewable energy experts interviewed in the article noted that rising interest rates, labor shortages, supply chain disruptions, and changing market conditions have placed significant pressure on residential solar companies nationwide. Nick Hylla of the Midwest Renewable Energy Association advised homeowners to carefully research solar contractors, review company histories, and verify warranties before signing contracts.

Overall, the article presents both the promise and risks associated with residential solar adoption. While solar energy remains an important tool for sustainability and energy independence, the story emphasizes the importance of consumer awareness, contractor reliability, and industry accountability to ensure homeowners receive the benefits they were promised.
