This article highlights Milwaukee homeowner John Hambrook’s positive experience with the City of Milwaukee’s Grow Solar campaign, a program designed to encourage residential solar energy adoption through group purchasing discounts and educational outreach. Hambrook, who participated in the 2023 program, shared how installing solar panels on his home has benefited both his family and the environment. He explained that after considering solar energy for several years, the city’s initiative finally motivated him to move forward because it reduced costs and simplified the process for homeowners.
The Grow Solar campaign works by combining many buyers into a single purchasing group, allowing participants to receive discounts on solar equipment and installation. The initiative is supported by the City of Milwaukee, the Midwest Renewable Energy Association, and local solar companies. Officials launched the 2024 campaign at Hambrook’s home, where Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson emphasized the city’s commitment to renewable energy and climate goals.
Hambrook said one of his primary motivations was environmental responsibility, especially as a father of four children. He viewed solar energy as a practical step toward reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change. Financial considerations also played a role. Although solar panel installation can be expensive initially, Hambrook noted that city incentives, federal tax credits, and reduced electricity bills could allow the system to pay for itself within 10 to 15 years.
The article also points out that solar energy is not suitable for every home. Hambrook acknowledged that factors such as roof orientation, tree coverage, and sunlight exposure can affect whether solar panels are effective. His home’s large south-facing roof made it an ideal candidate for solar installation. Since 2013, the Grow Solar program has helped hundreds of Milwaukee-area properties adopt solar power, while continuing to educate residents through informational sessions and community outreach.
